110 Horse Coloring Pages - Free PDF Printables

By: Crafty Josh | Last Update:

Most foals are up on their long, wobbly legs within an hour or two of being born, and that very moment is one of the pages in this collection. Our 110 horse coloring pages are free printable designs you can download as a PDF in US Letter or A4, ready to print at home, at preschool or in the classroom.

Toddlers and preschoolers get big, simple horses with extra-thick outlines, like a sleepy foal curled up in the grass or a horse peeking over a stable door. Horse-mad older kids will find fuller scenes too, from a farrier fitting a new shoe to a herd galloping across open hills.

Every horse is drawn the way real horses look and behave, so you'll see them grazing in the meadow, rolling in the dust and dozing on their feet. If your child loves these, check out our Wild West coloring pages and Unicorn coloring pages too.

5 fun things to do with Horse coloring pages

These ideas use things you probably already have at home, like cardstock, glue and an old shoebox. They work just as well on a rainy afternoon as they do in a classroom.

  1. Build a shoebox stable

Turn an old shoebox into a stable block and fill it with colored horses. The horse looking over the stable door and the shaggy Shetland pony are both great for this, since they're big and easy to cut around.

Kids can name each horse and make a little sign for every stall.

    You'll need:
    • A shoebox
    • Craft sticks
    • Glue and scissors
    • Shredded paper for straw
    • Colored horse pages
    How to do it:
    • Turn the shoebox on its side and glue in craft sticks to divide it into stalls.
    • Sprinkle shredded paper on the floor for straw.
    • Color and cut out a few horses, then glue a strip of cardstock to the back so they stand up.
    • Add a small name sign above each stall.

Feeding time can be just as fun as building time, so add a paper hay net or two.

  2. Hold a pretend horse show

Color a handful of horses, line them up and hand out homemade rosettes. The pony with the neatly braided mane and the horse sailing over the striped show jump make perfect show-ring stars.

Let kids be the judge, the rider and the commentator all at once.

    You'll need:
    • Colored horse pages
    • Cardstock circles
    • Ribbon or paper strips
    • Tape and markers
    How to do it:
    • Color and cut out four or five horses.
    • Make rosettes by taping ribbon tails to the back of cardstock circles.
    • Decorate the rosettes with stars or zigzags.
    • Award a rosette to every horse for something different, like best mane or fastest gallop.

Everyone goes home a winner, which keeps the peace with siblings.

  3. Make a hobby horse

The big horse head page, the one facing forward with the long forelock, is just the right size for a simple hobby horse. Once it's on a stick, kids can trot it around the house or the yard.

A yarn mane makes it feel much more real.

    You'll need:
    • The horse head page
    • Thin cardboard
    • A cardboard tube or wooden dowel
    • Yarn
    • Glue and strong tape
    How to do it:
    • Color the horse head and glue it onto cardboard.
    • Cut around the outline once the glue is dry.
    • Glue short loops of yarn along the neck for a mane.
    • Tape the head firmly to the top of the tube or dowel.

Make two and they can race each other.

  4. Play a horse markings matching game

Real horses are often told apart by their markings, like a star on the forehead or white socks on the legs. Use the horse with the star and socks as your starting point, then color matching pairs with different coats and markings.

It's a sneaky way to practice spotting details.

    You'll need:
    • Several copies of a simple horse page
    • Crayons or colored pencils
    • Cardstock and glue
    • Scissors
    How to do it:
    • Print the same horse several times.
    • Color them in pairs, giving each pair its own coat color and markings.
    • glue each one onto cardstock and cut it into a square.
    • Shuffle them face down and take turns finding the matching pairs.

Younger kids can play with three or four pairs, and older kids with lots more.

  5. Make a foal's first year storybook

Several pages follow a foal growing up, from its first wobbly steps in the straw to drinking milk beside its mother and kicking up its heels in the field. Put them in order and you've got a ready-made picture book.

Kids can write or tell a line of the story for each page.

    You'll need:
    • Four to six foal pages
    • Colored cardstock for a cover
    • A stapler or hole punch and ribbon
    • A pencil for the story
    How to do it:
    • Color the foal pages and lay them out in order.
    • Add a sentence at the bottom of each page about what the foal is doing.
    • Make a cover and give the foal a name.
    • Staple or tie the pages together along one edge.

It makes a lovely bedtime story to read back together.

Horses can doze standing up because their legs have a special locking system that stops them falling over. They still need to lie down for short spells of deep sleep, though.

There are plenty more animals waiting in the barnyard, so head back to our Farm Animals coloring pages to find cows, pigs, sheep and more.
