It's the week before Halloween, the costumes are half-finished and the kids are already bouncing off the walls. Our Halloween coloring pages give them something calm to do in between, with 493 free printable designs you can download as a PDF in US Letter or A4.
Everything here is friendly rather than frightening. You'll find smiling jack-o'-lanterns, pumpkin patch outings, trick-or-treaters in homemade costumes, cute witches with their black cats, and ghosts that look more likely to wave than to spook anyone.
Most pages are drawn for children under five, with thick outlines and big shapes that are easy for small hands. There are more detailed scenes for older kids too, and plenty of choice for preschool teachers planning October classroom activities. If your child enjoys these, take a look at our Kawaii Cats coloring pages and Teddy Bears coloring pages too.
Halloween doesn't have to be all orange and black, and these pages are drawn to be cheerful rather than scary. Here are a few ideas that work across the whole collection.
Pumpkins are the natural place to start. Real pumpkins come in bright orange, pale peach and even creamy white, so try mixing all three and finish the stems in warm brown. On the jack-o'-lanterns, coloring the carved eyes and mouth bright yellow makes them look lit from inside.
The night scenes are drawn with a white sky, so small children don't have to fill a huge area. A light purple or soft blue sky looks magical and still lets the moon, stars and bats stand out. Older kids can try a darker navy, coloring carefully around the moon first.
On the costume pages, let your child decide what each character is dressed as before picking colors. A green dinosaur, a pink cat or a rainbow witch's hat is just as good as the traditional look, and it's a nice way to plan their own costume for the big night.
Black cats, bats and witches' hats don't need to be colored solid black, which tires out little arms and hides the details. Dark gray or deep purple works just as well, and gold eyes on a cat really stand out against it.
