Haunted House and Ghost Crafting from Coloring Pages

  1. Peek-through haunted house

Turn one of the house pages into a lift-the-flap picture with ghosts hiding behind every window. The crooked mansion on top of a hill and the house with a weathervane and tower both have plenty of windows to open.

Little ones love finding out who's behind each one.

    You'll need:
    • A haunted house page
    • A small ghost page printed at about 30 percent size
    • A sheet of plain paper
    • Scissors (adult help for cutting flaps)
    • Glue stick
    How to do it:
    • Color the house, then an adult cuts three sides of each window so it opens like a door.
    • Color and cut out several small ghosts.
    • Glue the plain paper behind the house and stick a ghost behind each window.
    • Close the flaps and let your child open them one by one.

Leave one window empty to keep everyone guessing.

  2. Ghost washing line garland

The ghost drying on a washing line page is the inspiration for this one. Color and cut out a handful of ghosts, then peg them along a length of string like laundry hung out to dry.

It looks great strung across a doorway or a bedroom window.

    You'll need:
    • Several ghost pages printed at half size
    • Scissors
    • String or twine
    • Mini clothespins
    How to do it:
    • Color the ghosts and cut them out.
    • Tie the string across a doorway, window or shelf.
    • Peg each ghost to the string with a mini clothespin.
    • Add a few paper socks between the ghosts for a funny touch.

Kids can swap the ghosts around whenever they like.

  3. Where's the ghost hide-and-seek

The haunted house cutaway showing every room makes a great board for a hide-and-seek game. One player hides a small paper ghost somewhere in the picture while everyone else closes their eyes.

Then they take turns guessing which room it's in.

    You'll need:
    • The haunted house cutaway page, printed large
    • One small ghost page printed at about 15 percent size
    • Scissors
    • Sticky tack
    How to do it:
    • Color the cutaway house and tape it to a wall or table.
    • Cut out the tiny ghost and add a dot of sticky tack to the back.
    • Hide the ghost in one of the rooms while the others look away.
    • Ask yes or no questions like "Is it in the attic?" until someone finds it.

The player who finds it gets to hide the ghost next.

  4. Flashlight ghost shadow show

Ghost outlines make great shadow puppets. Cut out a few of the single ghosts, tape them to sticks and shine a flashlight to cast floating ghost shadows on the wall.

It's a fun way to make the dark feel a little less scary.

    You'll need:
    • A few single ghost pages
    • Card stock
    • Craft sticks and tape
    • A flashlight
    How to do it:
    • Glue the ghosts onto card stock and cut them out.
    • Tape each ghost to a craft stick.
    • Dim the lights and shine the flashlight at a plain wall.
    • Hold the ghosts between the light and the wall and make them float.

Move the ghost closer to the light to make it grow.

  5. Ghost story cards

Pick out a mix of pages, like the ghost butler opening the door, the friendly ghost ship and the library with floating books, and turn them into story prompt cards. Everyone draws a card and adds a sentence to a story that's silly rather than scary.

It's a modern take on telling ghost stories around the fire.

    You'll need:
    • 6 to 10 pages printed at quarter size
    • Card stock
    • Glue stick and scissors
    • A bag or box to draw cards from
    How to do it:
    • Color the small pictures and glue each one onto a card.
    • Put all the cards in the bag.
    • Take turns drawing a card and adding one sentence to the story.
    • Keep going until the cards run out and the story has an ending.

Younger kids can just describe what they see on the card.

In Victorian times, families often told ghost stories at Christmas, not Halloween. That's why Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843 as a ghost story, with Scrooge visited by four ghosts on Christmas Eve.
