By: Crafty Josh | Last Update:

Our Friendly Monsters coloring pages turn our imaginary monster into a friend who reads bedtime stories, shares a teddy and plugs in the nightlight. There are 110 free printable designs here, and each one downloads as a PDF in US Letter or A4.

Toddlers can start with big monster faces and simple shapes. Preschoolers get baby monsters, kawaii fluffballs and a set of monsters showing different feelings, while kids ages 4 to 7 can color monster bands, monster school and monster sports. Older kids and adults will find a monster city, friendly sea serpents and detailed folklore scenes.

These pages work well for parents of children who get nervous at night, and for preschool teachers talking about feelings and shapes. If your child enjoys these, try our Cute Witches and Black Cats coloring pages and Trick-or-Treat and Costumes coloring pages too.

5 fun things to do with Friendly Monsters coloring pages

These ideas use paper, glue, scissors and a few simple extras from around the house. They're easy to set up at home or in a preschool classroom.

Friendly Monsters Craft Table

  1. Monster feelings chart

The five feelings pages show a happy monster jumping for joy, a sad monster with a single tear, a grumpy monster stomping, a scared monster peeking through its hands and a calm monster taking a deep breath. Together they make a simple chart kids can use to show how they're feeling.

It's a gentle way to start a conversation about big emotions.

    You'll need:
    • The five monster feelings pages
    • A large sheet of card
    • Glue stick
    • A clothespin
    How to do it:
    • Color the five monsters and cut them out.
    • Glue them in a row down the sheet of card.
    • Hang the chart somewhere your child can reach.
    • Each day, let them clip the clothespin beside the monster that matches their mood.

Ask what might help the sad or grumpy monster feel better.

  2. Bedside monster guard

For little ones who worry about the dark, turn the friendly monster peeking out from under the bed into a guard that stands on the bedside table all night. It's a fun way to make the idea of monsters feel safe.

The monster switching on the nightlight works well for this too.

    You'll need:
    • A bedtime monster page
    • Card stock
    • Scissors and glue stick
    • A clothespin or small lump of modeling clay for a stand
    How to do it:
    • Color the monster and glue the page onto card stock.
    • Cut around the monster, leaving a flat strip at the bottom.
    • Clip the strip into the clothespin or press it into the clay so it stands up.
    • Give the monster a name and put it on guard by the bed.

A goodnight wave to the monster can become part of the bedtime routine.

  3. Feed the monster toss game

The monster slurping spaghetti and the monster holding a giant sandwich look hungry enough to eat anything. Turn one into a beanbag toss game by cutting out its mouth and taping it to a box.

Kids score a point every time they feed the monster.

    You'll need:
    • A monster food page, printed large
    • A cardboard box
    • Scissors and tape
    • Scrunched paper balls or small beanbags for snacks
    How to do it:
    • Color the monster and tape it to the front of the box.
    • An adult cuts out the open mouth through both the page and the box.
    • Mark a throwing line on the floor with tape.
    • Take turns tossing paper snacks into the monster's mouth.

Move the line back as everyone's aim improves.

  4. Shape monster sorting game

The circle, square, triangle, star and heart monsters are made for early shape learning. Print a few copies and use them to sort everyday objects and pictures by shape.

It's a hands-on activity that fits easily into a preschool math lesson.

    You'll need:
    • The five shape monster pages
    • Five paper plates or small trays
    • Glue stick
    • Small objects or cut-out paper shapes to sort
    How to do it:
    • Color each shape monster and glue one onto each plate.
    • Mix up the objects and paper shapes in a pile.
    • Ask your child to give each monster the shapes that match its body.
    • Count how many each monster ends up with.

Buttons, coins and blocks all make good sorting pieces.

  5. Fuzzy texture monster collage

The fuzzy ball monster and the big hairy monster doing ballet are perfect for adding real texture. Gluing yarn, cotton balls or fabric scraps onto the fur turns a flat coloring page into something kids want to touch.

Googly eyes make the finished monster even sillier.

    You'll need:
    • A fuzzy monster page
    • Yarn scraps, cotton balls or felt
    • Googly eyes
    • PVA glue and a brush
    How to do it:
    • Color the face, hands and feet first.
    • Brush glue over the furry parts, one small section at a time.
    • Press on yarn, cotton or felt to cover the fur.
    • Add googly eyes on top and leave it to dry flat.

Short snipped yarn pieces look the most like real fur.

Long ago, mapmakers often drew sea monsters in the empty parts of the ocean on their maps. One famous map from 1539, called the Carta Marina, shows the seas around Scandinavia filled with giant sea serpents, whales and other strange creatures.

When the monsters are finished, there's lots more seasonal fun to color. Head back to our full Halloween coloring pages collection for pumpkins, costumes and more.
